The Heirloom sets you will see in the next album are made using more expensive or highly decorated fabrics and lace. They are designed to be used for Christening/naming occasions and then perhaps for handing down to family members as keepsakes of their childhood. As you will see, they are quite special quilts, pillowcases and canopy covers and, like the other quilt sets I make, can be made to suit the pram you are using or designed to a specific design you may have in mind.

All my designs are made to a high standard using the traditional methods of needlework which have been handed down throughout generations and which used to be taught in English schools until the Government, in their wisdom, abolished tuition of this very necessary skill. In past times, all women were taught to sew and the majority of them could make their own clothes using the skills they had been taught either by their mothers or by their needlework teacher at school.
My canopy covers are made with at least three layers of fabric, an underlining of polycotton in a dark colour, not necessarily green, a middle layer of dense white polycotton and a top decorative layer. If the set is made with embroidered voile, then there would be another layer of white polycotton to make sure the dark colour underneath does not bleed through. I have designed a special attaching tape which eliminates the need for sewing, all you need is eight fingers and two thumbs and you can attach and remove the cover in seconds rather than the length of time it takes to wrestle with the frame whilst you are either sewing on the cover or undoing your sewing. The cover is then trimmed with either a long silky fringe or gathered lace, perhaps adding another layer of shorter lace which has been used on the quilt.

The quilts are made using the finest, most delicate fabrics I can find, and then they are trimmed with deliciously beautiful laces and ribbons to bring out the colours without swamping the design. I fill the quilts with 8oz fireproof washable wadding and it is sewn and overlocked in place so that it won't buckle when washed. Some of the designs have handsewn lace on them to anchor the delicate embroidery to the top of the quilt. Each quilt is edged with a longer embroidered lace or frill to drape down the sides of the pram giving a luxuriously elegant dressing.

The pillowcases are made to exactly match the quilt and are big enough to cover a large pram pillow.

This set was especially made for a little baby boy's Christening and it goes perfectly with his Christening, I'm sure you will agree! His mummy gave me her ideas and left the rest to me. You will find more photos of this set in the Heirloom Album under "Thomas".
